Volkswagen CEO warns of factory closures as Chinese EV competition intensifies

Europe’s everyday car builders are facing huge trouble from new competition and a fast-changing market. The head of Volkswagen says the local car industry is now under giant pressure. On Tuesday, he called for new government rules and cash rewards to protect local car manufacturing.

Top boss Oliver Blume spoke at a major event during the 2026 Paris Auto Show. He explained that three giant companies make more than 60 percent of all European cars. These companies are Volkswagen, Stellantis, and Renault. Right now, all three are fighting hard to build low-cost electric cars while trying to stop their costs from rising.

Massive Job Cuts and Factory Pressures

“We cannot build our future on export profits alone. Our European businesses must be profitable, resilient and competitive,” Blume stated during his speech. The automotive leader is currently pushing for the largest overhaul in his company’s long history.

This major corporate cleanup plan includes tens of thousands of job cuts. It could also lead to closing down local car factories. Labor unions are fighting back against these changes, but management says the survival of the business is at risk. “We must secure Europe’s industrial base,” Blume added.

High Sales Volume with Thin Profit Margins

The main problem is that Volkswagen, Stellantis, and Renault rely heavily on the everyday car market. In this specific area of business, companies must sell a massive number of cars just to make money. This is because the profit margins on cheap vehicles are very thin.

“This business model is under enormous pressure in Europe,” Blume warned. To fix this, he wants lawmakers to create more flexible automotive regulation rules. He also wants governments to give out financial incentives to help local car factories stay open.

At the same time, the car market is shifting quickly. Local demand for electric cars is rising fast because fuel prices are higher. Buyers are also looking for a wider selection of low-cost vehicles.
To meet this demand, local brands are using the car show to display their newest electric models. However, foreign competitors are also arriving in record numbers. Chinese car brands are flooding into Europe because sales have slowed down in their own home country.

European car builders are deeply worried about these cheap imports. Without quick government help and cost reductions, local factories may not survive the intense pressure from foreign electric car brands.
