Carmaker Stellantis has signed a five-year partnership with Microsoft to accelerate its artificial intelligence push, as legacy automakers race to keep up with fast-moving tech rivals.
The deal will see both companies co-develop more than 100 AI-driven projects across engineering, vehicle development, and digital services, marking a major shift toward software-led car manufacturing.
AI and Predictive Maintenance Take Centre Stage
At the core of the agreement is the expansion of predictive maintenance and product testing systems. Stellantis says these tools will help detect faults earlier, improve vehicle quality, and speed up the rollout of new features.
The automaker is also doubling down on connected vehicle platforms, aiming to deliver more personalised in-car experiences as competition intensifies, particularly from Chinese manufacturers.
Cybersecurity and Cybersecurity Analytics Expansion
The partnership includes a significant upgrade to Stellantis’ global cyber defence centre. Using cybersecurity analytics, the system will monitor threats across vehicles, mobile apps, factories, and IT systems.
This comes as cars become more connected—and more vulnerable to cyber risks.
Cloud Shift and Azure Cloud Platform Integration
Stellantis will also modernise its IT systems using Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, targeting a 60% reduction in its data centre footprint by 2029.
The move reflects a wider industry shift toward data centre optimisation, where automakers cut costs and improve speed by relying on cloud infrastructure instead of physical servers.
A Broader Industry Trend
The deal highlights a growing reality, that traditional carmakers are leaning on Big Tech to close the gap in software and AI.
Stellantis has previously partnered with Amazon on in-car software, though that deal is winding down, suggesting a strategic pivot toward deeper, more integrated collaborations.
As software becomes central to how cars are built and sold, partnerships like this may determine which automakers stay competitive in the next decade.
