Lagos is moving to ease daily gridlock with the arrival of new trains designed to carry hundreds of thousands of passengers and cut waiting times across the city’s growing rail network.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the state has taken delivery of 24-car trains to boost operations on the Red Line, a key route linking residential and commercial hubs.

“This will improve capacity, reduce wait times and make daily commuting easier for Lagosians,” he said in a post on X.

Boost to Mass Transit Infrastructure

The new trains are part of a broader push into mass transit infrastructure, with the Red Line expected to scale up service frequency. The additional rolling stock will be deployed across three train sets, strengthening an existing fleet that currently runs on the Agbado–Oyingbo corridor.

The 27-kilometre line, launched for commercial use in February 2024, connects densely populated districts including Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin and Yaba. It also integrates with the Blue Line at Marina, forming a wider urban network.

Urban Rail Investment and Capacity Expansion

Managed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, the system is part of a long-term urban rail investment strategy aimed at transforming mobility in Lagos.

LAMATA plans to increase daily trips on the corridor to about 37, with a long-term goal of moving more than 500,000 passengers daily. The expansion aligns with broader rail transport expansion goals to reduce congestion and improve connectivity.

Infrastructure Financing and Economic Impact

Officials say the project will also drive economic activity along the corridor, as improved public transportation systems typically attract businesses and reduce logistics costs.

Future extensions are expected to link the line to the National Theatre and provide direct access to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, strengthening airport connectivity and commuter access.

For a city long defined by traffic bottlenecks, the success of this expansion could determine whether rail becomes a true alternative to road travel.
