Over the past 12 months, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras in Lagos State have captured 470,000 traffic violations. This is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and improve traffic management. These cameras, which have been deployed across key locations, have proven to be a powerful tool in monitoring traffic behaviour and enforcing compliance with road regulations.

In addition to the traffic violations, other notable achievements have emerged from the Lagos State Government (LASG) in recent months. The Blue Line rail service, which has been a vital part of the city’s public transportation expansion, has now successfully transported over 2 million passengers since its launch. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has evacuated over 6,580 broken-down vehicles, helping to keep major roads clear and reduce congestion.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu highlighted these significant achievements during a press briefing, stating: “The increase in traffic violations captured by our ANPR cameras underscores the need for stricter enforcement and greater awareness among road users. We’re committed to improving traffic flow and ensuring the safety of Lagosians.”

ANPR camera violations: A wake-up call for road users

The 470,000 traffic violations, captured by ANPR cameras from January 2023 to March 2025, reflect an alarming trend of non-compliance with traffic laws. These violations include speeding, running red lights, illegal parking, and other infractions that contribute to road accidents and congestion.

“The data we’re receiving from these cameras shows the extent to which drivers are disregarding basic traffic laws. This is a clear indication that more needs to be done to instill discipline and reduce reckless driving,” said Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Director of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.

The state government is currently exploring additional measures to address these issues, including the expansion of the ANPR system to cover more areas and incorporating advanced technology to track repeat offenders.

Blue Line’s Success: Transporting 2 million passengers

The Blue Line, a key component of Lagos’ transportation network, has also marked a significant milestone. The rail line, which has been operational since the beginning of the year, has now transported 2 million passengers. This success is part of the state government’s plan to reduce traffic congestion and provide an alternative, sustainable mode of transport for Lagos residents.

“The Blue Line has proven to be a game-changer for the city’s public transportation system,” said Sanwo-Olu. “The figures show that more and more Lagosians are opting for rail transport, and we’re committed to expanding this network further.”

LASTMA’s efforts in road safety

In another key development, LASTMA has worked tirelessly to keep Lagos roads free from accidents and gridlocks. From January 2023 to March 2025, the agency successfully evacuated 6,580 broken-down vehicles, a vital effort in ensuring the smooth flow of traffic.

“These evacuations are a crucial part of our daily operations. A single broken-down vehicle can cause major delays and accidents, so we’re constantly on the lookout to clear these obstructions,” said Adebayo Adeleke, LASTMA spokesperson.

A Commitment to Improvement

Lagos State’s drive towards improving road safety and public transportation is clear. With plans for further technological upgrades and the expansion of infrastructure, the state government is focused on making significant strides in reducing traffic violations, improving road conditions, and enhancing the public transportation experience for millions of residents.

As the city continues to grow and evolve, Governor Sanwo-Olu concluded, “We are not stopping here. We will continue to introduce innovations that will transform Lagos into a more efficient, safer, and more sustainable city for all.”
