France is facing a new kind of vehicle crime wave that leaves cars stripped bare right on public streets. Instead of stealing entire vehicles, thieves are now removing valuable external parts in broad daylight. Official reports show that nearly 100,000 vehicle accessories vanished in a single year, and the trend is rising fast.
The fast-growing problem means a vehicle is stripped for parts every three minutes on average across the country. According to official figures from the French Ministry of the Interior, 96,100 vehicle parts thefts were reported in 2024. This represents an annual jump of about 4 percent, and the crime wave shows no sign of slowing down.
Soaring Replacement Costs Drive Headlight Snatches
The wave of automotive parts theft is overwhelmingly focused on the outside of vehicles rather than the cabin interiors. Headlights have become the number one target for these modern pirates. Thieves need less than five minutes to remove a headlight, usually by ripping out or unscrewing the front section and the grille.
Headlights alone now make up a third of all reported parts thefts. This extreme popularity is driven by a massive spike in replacement costs. The price of a new headlight has soared 70 percent in the last five years.
Precious Metals and Components on the Black Market
Other exterior components are also high on the target list for criminal groups. Catalytic converters account for 19 percent of all thefts. Thieves target these parts not just for resale, but to harvest the expensive precious metals hidden inside them.
Furthermore, wheels and rims represent 18 percent of thefts, while bumpers make up 10 percent. Seasoned thieves bring basic tools and can remove all four wheels in under ten minutes. Even factory security lug nuts only slow them down a little bit. Recently, expensive reverse cameras have also become a highly popular item for thieves to snatch.
Top Vehicles and Crime Hotspots Targeted
The vehicles in the crosshairs are mostly cars that are highly popular in France. Compact city cars top the hit list, including the Renault Clio, Peugeot 208, and Citroën C3. However, high-end luxury models are not spared. Parts from BMW and Mercedes are in high demand due to their excellent resale value on the black market and on second-hand sales sites.
The hardest-hit areas are urban and suburban departments. The Bouches-du-Rhône department, which includes Marseille, faces heavy losses. The areas right around Paris are also severely affected, including Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-d’Oise, and Val-de-Marne.
This crime wave leaves a heavy toll on everyday drivers. “Repairs can run to several thousand euros, and waiting times for new replacement parts are often frustratingly long,” drivers noted. Authorities are working to curb the wave, but for now, the soaring cost of car insurance claims and parts replacements remains a massive burden for local motorists.
