In a bid to address falling sales and streamline operations, Elon Musk, the Chief Executive Officer of Tesla Inc, has taken decisive action by dismissing two senior executives and announcing plans for further layoffs. The move underscores Musk’s commitment to bolstering the company’s financial health and operational efficiency amidst an intensifying price war in the electric vehicle (EV) market.

According to a report by The Information, Rebecca Tinucci, the senior director of Tesla’s Supercharger business, and Daniel Ho, the head of the new vehicles program, have been let go, with their teams set to follow suit. The decision reflects Musk’s growing frustration with the pace of job cuts and the need for stringent cost-reduction measures.

In an email to senior managers, Musk emphasised the urgency of the situation, stating, “Hopefully these actions are making it clear that we need to be hardcore about headcount and cost reduction.” The report further stated that Tesla’s public policy team, led by former executive Rohan Patel, will also be dissolved as part of the restructuring efforts.

The recent developments come on the heels of Tesla’s announcement earlier this month, which saw the departure of two other senior leaders, including Patel and battery development chief Drew Baglino, along with layoffs affecting over 10% of the company’s workforce.

Tesla, which boasted 140,473 employees globally as of the end of 2023, is facing mounting challenges, including falling sales and an escalating price war in the EV market. The company reported a decline in quarterly revenue for the first time since 2020, highlighting the need for strategic measures to shore up its financial performance.

Despite the challenges, Musk remains focused on advancing Tesla’s technological capabilities, particularly in key markets like China. During a surprise visit to Beijing, Musk made progress towards rolling out Tesla’s advanced driver-assistance package, a move aimed at enhancing the company’s competitive position in the region.

The visit to China follows Musk’s decision to cancel a planned trip to India, where Tesla has been eyeing opportunities to expand its operations. Citing “very heavy Tesla obligations,” Musk’s decision underscores the dynamic nature of Tesla’s global operations and the strategic choices being made to navigate a rapidly evolving market landscape.
