BYD targets Japan’s electric vehicle market with low-cost mini EV

China’s BYD has launched a low-cost electric mini-car in Japan, marking its biggest push yet into one of the country’s most competitive automotive segments as the world’s largest electric vehicle maker seeks to expand beyond China.

The Shenzhen-based automaker unveiled the Racco, an electric kei car priced from 1.95 million yen before taxes and government subsidies. After incentives, buyers can purchase the entry-level model for less than 2 million yen, a price level analysts say could become a major selling point for Japanese consumers.

Despite the aggressive pricing, Japan’s best-selling electric mini-car, Nissan’s Sakura, remains cheaper after subsidies because it qualifies for a larger government incentive.

“Looking at the price, you can see how serious BYD is about taking on the Japanese market,” said Tang Jin, senior researcher at Mizuho Bank.

Affordable Electric Vehicle Strategy

BYD aims to secure 10,000 orders for the Racco before the end of 2026 as it looks to revive sales after entering Japan’s passenger-car market in 2023.

BYD Auto Japan President Atsuki Tofukuji acknowledged the sales target is based more on confidence than extensive market analysis.

“It’s really a matter of determination and gut feeling,” Tofukuji told reporters, adding that annual sales at that level should be sustainable if dealerships average one order per day.

If demand falls short, analysts say BYD could introduce promotional campaigns or additional features to stimulate sales.

Electric Vehicle Features Challenge Japanese Rivals

The Racco offers a driving range of up to 320 kilometres (199 miles) and becomes the first electric mini-car equipped with sliding rear doors, a feature widely preferred by Japanese families.

Analyst Hiroki Ihara of Tachibana Securities said the launch is also designed to improve BYD’s brand recognition in Japan by entering the country’s influential kei-car market.

Kei cars account for about one-third of Japan’s automobile sales, a category historically dominated by domestic manufacturers including Honda and Suzuki.

Growing Competition in the Global EV Market

BYD had sold just over 7,400 vehicles in Japan by the end of 2025 since entering the passenger-car market in early 2023.

The launch underscores the increasing competitive pressure Chinese automakers are placing on Japanese manufacturers, which have already been losing market share to BYD and other domestic EV makers in China, the world’s largest automobile market.
