A Chinese-built pickup truck is attracting growing attention in Canada, raising fresh questions about how quickly the country’s automotive market could change if more affordable electrified vehicles become available.
The BYD Shark 6, a plug-in hybrid pickup developed by Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD, has received strong praise from a Canadian automotive reviewer after a recent test drive in Montreal. The review suggests the truck could become a serious competitor in one of North America’s most competitive vehicle segments.
The excitement comes as demand for electrified vehicles continues to grow worldwide. Consumers are increasingly looking for vehicles that reduce fuel costs without sacrificing practicality, towing capability or long-distance driving.
The reviewer, Simply Gregster EV, described the vehicle as the first BYD Shark 6 to be driven publicly in Canada. He said he had long wanted to test a Chinese-built vehicle on Canadian roads and believed the opportunity would give viewers a glimpse of what could be coming in the future.
During the road test, the reviewer highlighted the Shark 6’s plug-in hybrid powertrain, which combines a petrol engine with a 29.58-kWh battery pack. The system delivers between 50 and 62 miles (80 to 100 kilometres) of electric-only driving, depending on driving conditions.
When the petrol engine and battery work together, the pickup offers a combined driving range of more than 500 miles (around 800 kilometres). That allows drivers to complete most daily journeys using electricity while keeping the flexibility of a conventional engine for longer trips.
The reviewer said the Shark 6 drove more like a refined SUV than a traditional pickup truck. He praised its smooth handling, comfortable ride and modern technology before delivering a simple verdict.
“If they brought this to Canada, it would sell out,” he said.
The growing interest reflects a wider shift in consumer expectations. Buyers increasingly want vehicles that combine lower running costs with everyday practicality.
Plug-in hybrid pickups offer one possible solution. Drivers who regularly recharge the battery can complete most commuting without using petrol, reducing fuel expenses and lowering emissions. Regenerative braking also reduces wear on brake components, helping lower maintenance costs over time.
Industry analysts believe affordable electrified pickups could place significant pressure on established North American manufacturers. While companies including Ford, General Motors and Stellantis have introduced electric trucks, affordability remains a major concern for many buyers.
Chinese manufacturers, led by BYD, have rapidly expanded their global footprint by offering vehicles packed with technology at competitive prices. The company has become one of the world’s largest producers of new energy vehicles and continues expanding across Asia, Europe, Latin America and Australia.
Although BYD has not announced plans to sell the Shark 6 in Canada or the United States, growing public interest suggests there could be strong demand if regulatory approval and market entry become possible.
Online reactions echoed the reviewer’s enthusiasm.
One BYD owner wrote: “As a BYD driver myself, all I can say to my friends in Canada is that they are in for a treat.”
Another commenter noted that the Shark 6 has become a common sight in Australia, describing the pickup as “really popular.”
A third user shared that a family member in Australia owns the vehicle and has been extremely satisfied with its performance.
For Canadian consumers, the Shark 6 represents more than another new pickup. It signals how rapidly the global automotive industry is changing, with Chinese manufacturers increasingly challenging long-established brands through competitive pricing, advanced technology and electrified powertrains.
Whether the Shark 6 eventually reaches Canadian showrooms remains uncertain. However, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: competition in the global pickup market is entering a new era.
