British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has been discharged from a Nigerian hospital after a car crash on Monday killed two of his close friends and team members. Joshua, 36, sustained minor injuries in the accident and is now recovering at home, authorities said.

The Lexus SUV carrying Joshua collided with a stationary truck on the Makun Expressway in Ogun State, about 30 miles from Lagos. Two of Joshua’s companions, Sina Ghami, his long-time strength and conditioning coach, and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, his personal trainer, were killed in the crash.

“Anthony is heavy-hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends,” the Lagos state commissioner for information, Gbenga Omotoso, said. Joshua and his mother visited the funeral home in Lagos to pay final respects as the bodies were prepared for repatriation.

Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, paid tribute on social media: “Rest in peace Latz and Sina. Your energy and loyalty will be deeply missed. Praying for strength for all their family, friends, and AJ during this very difficult time.”

The accident occurred while the vehicle was overtaking at high speed, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps. Social media footage showed Joshua in visible pain and dazed as bystanders helped him from the wrecked SUV. Authorities confirmed that no emergency intervention was required following multiple clinical assessments.

The tragedy has reignited concerns over road safety in Nigeria, where 5,421 people died in 9,570 road accidents in 2024, up from 5,081 fatalities the previous year.

Joshua, a two-time world heavyweight champion and 2012 Olympic gold medallist, had recently returned to the ring after a 15-month hiatus, defeating YouTube star Jake Paul by knockout on Dec. 19. Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed condolences and assured Joshua of the best medical care.

Fellow boxers and fans have also shared messages of support. John Fury, father of boxer Tyson Fury, said, “AJ, God had his arms wrapped around you tight. Looking at that crash, you’re one lucky guy.”
