China has achieved a historic milestone in 2024, producing over 10 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) year-to-date. This achievement cements China’s position as the world leader in NEV manufacturing, offering a glimpse into the future of sustainable mobility. Experts forecast that the country’s annual production will exceed 12 million units by year’s end, driven by surging demand and innovation.

The latest figures, released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), reveal an impressive 4.3% growth over last year’s total production of 9.59 million units. October alone contributed 1.46 million NEVs, marking a 47.93% year-on-year increase and an 11.94% rise compared to September. These numbers underscore China’s rapid progress in meeting global environmental goals.

The journey to this milestone began humbly in 2013, when just 18,000 NEVs were produced nationwide. By 2018, annual production surpassed one million units, and by 2022, it exceeded five million. Today’s achievement reflects not only technological advancements but also the nation’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and fostering clean energy solutions.

China’s NEV production mix highlights its diverse strategies for green transportation. Between January and October 2024, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 5.86 million units, a 14.06% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) saw explosive growth, with 3.91 million units produced—a staggering 80.73% year-on-year increase.

Adding a personal touch to this milestone, Dongfeng Motor’s Voyah brand announced that its SUV model, Courage, is officially the 10 millionth NEV produced this year. This symbolic vehicle embodies the industry’s resilience and innovation as it continues to meet soaring domestic and global demand.

China’s achievements highlight the nation’s pivotal role in the global transition to clean energy vehicles. With production expected to exceed 12 million units by year’s end, the country is setting a benchmark for the rest of the world to follow.
