Rivian has delivered more vehicles in a single quarter than ever before, helped by the arrival of its new R2 electric SUV.

The US electric vehicle maker delivered 19,248 vehicles in the three months to 30 September 2026.

That represents a 45.8% increase from the 13,201 vehicles delivered during the same quarter last year.

Rivian also produced 19,751 vehicles during the latest quarter, showing that production is broadly keeping pace with customer demand.

R2 emerges as key growth driver

The results are significant because they come shortly after customer deliveries of the Rivian R2 began in June.

Rivian does not disclose sales figures for each model in its range. However, the timing of the R2 launch and the sharp increase in deliveries suggest the new SUV is already making a substantial contribution.

The R2 is particularly important because it is designed to take Rivian beyond its established premium customer base.

The company has built its reputation around electric pickup trucks and SUVs, including the R1T and R1S. The R2 targets a much larger section of the market.

That gives the model an important role in Rivian’s plans to become a higher-volume electric vehicle manufacturer.

A crucial moment for Rivian

Rivian previously raised its 2026 delivery forecast from 62,000-67,000 vehicles to 65,000-70,000 vehicles.

Following its third-quarter performance, the company said it remains on track to meet that revised target.

To reach the lower end of its latest forecast, Rivian needs to deliver at least 65,000 vehicles this year.

The latest quarter therefore represents an important step towards that goal, particularly as the R2 moves into its first full year of customer deliveries.

The company had delivered 13,201 vehicles in the third quarter of 2025. The latest figure means quarterly deliveries have increased by 6,047 vehicles year-on-year.

Why the R2 matters

Rivian’s challenge has always been one of scale. Its existing electric trucks and SUVs have attracted attention, but their premium positioning limits the size of the potential customer base.

The R2 is intended to change that equation. A smaller and more accessible vehicle could allow Rivian to compete for customers who may not be willing or able to spend heavily on a large electric SUV or pickup.

That makes the R2 more than another model launch. It could become the vehicle that determines whether Rivian can successfully move towards mainstream EV sales.

Competition remains intense

The encouraging delivery figures come at a difficult time for electric vehicle manufacturers.

Rivian faces competition from established carmakers and rapidly expanding EV brands. It must also demonstrate that stronger deliveries can translate into sustainable profits.

The company has been working to strengthen its financial position while expanding its vehicle range and technology business. Its commercial relationships with companies including Amazon, Volkswagen and Uber have also provided important strategic support.

However, investors will be watching more than delivery numbers when Rivian releases its full third-quarter financial results. The company is scheduled to report its Q3 2026 financial results on 29 October and will host a webcast to discuss its performance and outlook.

That update should provide a clearer picture of how much momentum the R2 is generating and whether Rivian can turn higher sales into stronger financial performance.

For Rivian, the message from the latest figures is encouraging. The R2 appears to be giving the company something it has urgently needed: scale.

The next challenge is proving that this record quarter is the beginning of a sustained growth story rather than a temporary surge.
