American Airlines has announced a $125 million commercial project to redevelop Terminal 8 at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). This project aims to enhance the passenger experience by introducing a new Great Hall and over 60 new shopping and restaurant options in the terminal.
Collaborating with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, as well as Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW) Airports, American Airlines plans to completely redesign and expand the concessions program within Terminal 8. This includes improvements in dining, retail, duty-free shopping, performance spaces, and digitally enabled experiences for customers. Moreover, the redevelopment is expected to create more than 300 new concessions jobs.
Rick Cotton, the Executive Director of the Port Authority, expressed enthusiasm for this milestone in the extensive JFK Redevelopment Program. The initiative aims to provide a world-class travel experience, generate employment opportunities for local communities, and offer local and minority businesses a chance to thrive as design, construction, or concession partners.
Amanda Zhang, American Airlines’ Vice President of Airport Affairs and Facilities, highlighted the airline’s commitment to delivering a transformative dining and shopping experience that reflects the dynamic nature of the New York region. “The objective is to ensure a world-class experience at Terminal 8 and elevate the travel journey for customers and oneworld partners,” Zhang said.
It is important to note that this redevelopment program does not include the construction of a second Admirals Club, as confirmed by American Airlines on Twitter.
Terminal 8 at JFK was recently renovated with a $400 million investment from American Airlines and British Airways. The renovation project expanded the terminal, adding new lounge spaces, widebody gates, an upgraded baggage handling system, terminal space, and premium check-in areas. The revamped terminal has the capacity to accommodate around ten million passengers annually.
As of July 2023, American Airlines operates approximately 684 weekly departures from New York JFK Airport, offering nearly 100,000 seats for sale. It is the third-largest carrier in terms of weekly operations and seats, following Delta and JetBlue. American Airlines’ main routes from JFK include destinations such as Miami, Los Angeles, Boston, Charlotte, and Raleigh Durham. Internationally, American Airlines flies from JFK to 21 destinations, with some routes having multiple daily flights, including Rome Fiumicino, Toronto Pearson, and London Heathrow.
