FOLD, a German maker of foldable cargo bikes, has won the prestigious German Design Award 2026 in the category “Excellent Product Design – Bicycles and E-Bikes.” The award recognizes FOLD’s innovative solution for urban mobility that combines full-size cargo capacity with compact storage.

The winning product transforms from a full-length cargo bike into a compact form in under 40 seconds. It can fit in a car, train, or even a motorhome, allowing users to navigate crowded cities and small apartments without sacrificing functionality. FOLD’s design reduces the bike’s length from 2.36 meters to 1.6 meters and incorporates a 75° cable steering system for tight manoeuvring.

“The goal was simple, create freedom in urban spaces,” said Sahabi Arouna, designer and founder of FOLD. “Our bikes let people carry groceries, children, or gear while keeping streets and homes clutter-free.”

The bike’s foldable basket and platform allow it to expand from a narrow 31-centimeter width to a wider 61-centimeter cargo setup. Materials such as Chromoly steel and Kevlar reinforcement make it both lightweight and durable. FOLD offers both standard and electric versions, including the E-Fold Long John and a mini model designed for city life.

Originally developed by startup Avnson in Hamburg, the brand rebranded to FOLD to highlight its signature foldable innovation. The German Design Award, considered one of the world’s most prestigious design honors, celebrates products that merge relevance, innovation, and aesthetic appeal.

FOLD’s recognition comes amid rising demand for urban transport solutions that save space without compromising utility. As cities grow denser, products like FOLD may define the future of city living.
