BYD, the Chinese leader in new energy vehicles (NEVs), has launched its fifth-generation DM (dual mode) hybrid technology. This innovative system promises a comprehensive driving range of 2,100 kilometres for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), setting a new global standard.

At a highly anticipated event in Xi’an, BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu highlighted the impressive capabilities of this new technology. The plug-in hybrid vehicles equipped with the DM technology boast a thermal efficiency of 46.06 per cent and a fuel consumption rate of just 2.9 litres per 100 kilometres, even in an electricity-deficit state.

This remarkable driving range is achieved with a fully charged battery and a full tank of petrol, showcasing the high-capacity power batteries that are the heart of these vehicles.

BYD also introduced two new car models powered by the DM technology: the Qin L DM-i and the Seal 06 DM-i. These models consume only a third of the fuel that traditional cars use and can travel three times the distance. Prices for these models range from 99,800 yuan (approximately $14,000) to 139,800 yuan.

“Our goal is to lead the global development of plug-in hybrid technology and drive the green transformation of the automotive industry,” said Wang.

The Shenzhen-based carmaker has sold over 3.6 million plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to date.

According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the first four months of 2024 saw China’s production and sales of new energy vehicles reach 2.985 million and 2.94 million units, respectively. These figures represent year-on-year growth of 30.3 per cent and 32.3 per cent.

BYD’s latest advancements solidify its position as a global leader in the NEV market, continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible in sustainable transportation.
