The airline industry stands as a testament to human ingenuity, connecting people and goods across vast distances in our increasingly interconnected world. Despite the turbulence of recent times, the aviation sector is showing resilience, gradually rebounding from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and returning to its pre-pandemic vigor. In 2023, the global market size of the airline industry hovered just below $814.5 billion USD, marking a slight decline of three percent compared to its 2019 levels.

The Powerhouse: USA’s aviation dominance

The United States boasts the world’s largest airlines in terms of fleet size, workforce, and destinations served. Commercial aviation plays a vital role in the US economy, facilitating the movement of millions of passengers and vast quantities of cargo both domestically and internationally. Fuelled by a growing population and increasing disposable incomes, the demand for air travel in the US remains robust.

The surge in e-commerce and globalization has further propelled the demand for air cargo, with US airlines witnessing a significant uptick in passenger numbers, soaring by 30% year-on-year, as reported by Mordor Intelligence.

Fleet size: Symbol of connectivity

In the aviation realm, an airline’s fleet size serves as a testament to its magnitude and reach. Each aircraft represents a conduit of connectivity, highlighting the airline’s capability to connect people and places.

  • China Southern Airlines:

Leading China’s aviation prowess, China Southern Airlines boasts a fleet of 664 aircraft, including a mix of Airbus and Boeing models, with 155 new aircraft on the horizon.

  • Southwest Airlines:

Renowned for its operational efficiency, Southwest Airlines operates a fleet of 821 Boeing 737s, with 491 more on order, signaling continued expansion.

  • United Airlines:

With a fleet of 952 mainline aircraft and 718 on order, United Airlines balances Airbus and Boeing models, embodying a legacy of aviation excellence.

  • Delta Air Lines:

Resilient and innovative, Delta Air Lines operates a fleet of 986 aircraft, generating $58 billion in revenue in 2023, making it the highest-grossing airline globally.

  • American Airlines:

Ascending as the world’s largest by fleet size, American Airlines commands a fleet of 1,002 aircraft, showcasing a blend of Airbus and Boeing models, symbolizing unrivaled dominance.

Employing 87,190 individuals, Air China stands as a testament to China’s aviation resurgence, fostering a global presence.

  • Delta Air Lines:

United Airlines:
