Renault and Geely will invest €319 million in Brazil through their joint venture, expanding an industrial partnership as competition grows in the country’s automotive market.
The investment will bring the companies’ total investment in Brazil to €899 million between 2025 and 2027, the automakers said on Tuesday.
The partnership gives Geely access to Renault’s existing manufacturing plant and dealership network in Brazil. For Renault, the agreement is intended to increase the use of available capacity at its assembly plant and expand its vehicle portfolio with larger models.
Automotive investment expands Renault-Geely partnership
Renault announced last fall that it had completed a deal with Geely in Brazil.
The latest investment strengthens that arrangement in Latin America’s largest market, where Chinese automaker BYD has been gaining ground with affordable pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid models.
The development comes as automakers compete to expand their presence in markets where consumers have access to different forms of electrified vehicles.
For Renault, the partnership provides a way to make greater use of existing industrial capacity while giving Geely access to an established production and sales network.
The companies did not provide further details in the information released on Tuesday about how the €319 million investment will be allocated.
Hybrid vehicles to enter production in 2027
Renault also said its Hybrid E-Tech 4×4 flex-fuel technology will enter production in Brazil in 2027 under a new investment plan.
The move adds hybrid technology to Renault’s Brazil production strategy while the wider partnership with Geely expands the range of vehicles that can be offered through the existing industrial and dealership infrastructure.
The companies’ combined investment between 2025 and 2027 now stands at almost €900 million.
Brazil is the largest market in Latin America, making it an important market for automakers seeking to expand production and sales in the region.
Electric vehicle market draws global automakers
The Renault-Geely investment also highlights the competitive pressure facing established automakers as Chinese manufacturers expand their presence in global markets.
BYD has been gaining ground in Brazil with affordable pure electric and plug-in hybrid models, according to Reuters.
Renault and Geely’s expanded partnership combines manufacturing capacity, dealership access and new vehicle technology as the companies seek to strengthen their position in the market.
The latest investment therefore links three parts of the automotive strategy: local manufacturing, vehicle technology and market access.
For Renault, the plan will increase use of available assembly capacity and introduce larger models. For Geely, it provides access to an existing plant and dealership network. Renault’s Hybrid E-Tech 4×4 flex-fuel technology is scheduled to begin Brazilian production in 2027.
