Ford’s Valencia plant in Spain could soon become a major gateway for Chinese electric cars in Europe.
Chinese carmaker Geely is reportedly in talks to acquire part of Ford’s assembly facilities in Almussafes, Valencia. If completed, the move would give Geely its first car-making base in Europe and help Ford make better use of an underused site.
The deal has not been formally confirmed by Ford. Reuters reported that Ford described the reports as speculative and declined to comment.
But the discussions show how quickly Europe’s car industry is changing. Chinese automakers are no longer looking only to export vehicles into Europe. They are now seeking local production, partly to reduce exposure to tariffs, regulations and political pressure.
Why Valencia matters
The Ford plant in Valencia has long been one of the company’s important European manufacturing sites. But its role has reduced in recent years.
The factory now builds the Ford Kuga SUV. It previously produced models including the Mondeo, Galaxy and S-Max. Its annual capacity has been reported at about 300,000 vehicles, but it is not currently operating close to that level.
That unused space is what makes the plant attractive to Geely. Reports say the Chinese company could use Ford’s Body 3 assembly hall to begin European production.
For Ford, the arrangement could bring cash into its European business. It could also reduce pressure on a factory that has faced years of lower output and changing product plans.
For Geely, the benefit is even clearer. Building cars inside Europe would help the company compete more directly with established brands such as Volkswagen, Renault, Stellantis and Ford itself.
What Geely could build there
Geely could reportedly start with the Galaxy EX2, a small electric crossover sold in China as the Galaxy Xingyuan. CleanTechnica reported that the model topped China’s sales chart last year under that name.
The company may also use its GEA platform for more electric and plug-in hybrid models. Autocar reported that the architecture can support different body sizes and both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
There is also the possibility that Geely could build a Ford-branded model using the same platform. Reuters reported that local Spanish media said Geely may manufacture one of its own vehicles at the site and could also produce a vehicle for Ford.
That would be a significant shift. It would show how traditional Western carmakers and Chinese manufacturers may move from direct rivalry into practical cooperation.
Why this matters to Europe
The bigger story is not just one factory. It is about the future of car production in Europe.
Chinese automakers have grown rapidly because of competitive pricing, strong battery supply chains and fast product development. Europe is now a key target, but trade barriers are making direct imports more complicated.
Local production gives Chinese brands a stronger answer. It allows them to build closer to customers, work with European suppliers and reduce some risks linked to tariffs.
Reuters has reported that several Chinese automakers are looking for European manufacturing routes. Leapmotor vehicles are set to be built at a Stellantis plant in Spain, while other Chinese brands have explored production in Austria and elsewhere.
This means Europe’s EV market could become more competitive. For consumers, that may lead to more choice, faster model launches and stronger pressure on prices.
What it means for Ford
Ford is under pressure in Europe. The company has been reshaping its passenger-car business after ending several long-running models.
The Valencia plant is central to that transition. Reuters previously reported that Ford planned to build a new partly electric vehicle there from 2027, with a target of 300,000 units a year.
More recently, the Financial Times reported that Ford is planning a broader European product push, including a Fiesta successor, new small EVs developed with Renault, and a compact Bronco SUV to be built in Spain from 2028.
A partnership with Geely could therefore help Ford balance two problems at once. It could bring revenue from unused factory space while giving the company access to faster and cheaper electrified technology.
What it means for drivers
For drivers, the possible deal could mean more affordable electric and hybrid cars on European roads.
More local production can improve availability. It can also shorten supply chains and create stronger competition between brands.
That matters at a time when many buyers still worry about EV prices, charging access and long-term ownership costs. More competition does not solve every problem, but it can push carmakers to offer better value.
It could also help protect manufacturing jobs in Spain if new production brings fresh work to the plant and its suppliers.
The bigger picture
Ford and Geely have not confirmed a final agreement. That means the details may still change.
But the direction is clear. Europe’s car industry is entering a new phase, where Chinese automakers are not just selling into the market. They are preparing to build inside it.
If Valencia becomes Geely’s first European production base, it will be more than a factory deal. It will be another sign that the global EV race is moving from exports to local manufacturing.
And for Ford, it may show that survival in the new car market will depend less on going it alone, and more on choosing the right partners.
