The collapse of Lordstown Motors is a reminder that building electric vehicles is far more difficult than attracting investors. The company promised to revolutionise the American pickup truck market but instead became one of the biggest casualties of the electric vehicle investment boom.

Lordstown Motors was founded in 2018 after purchasing General Motors’ former assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio. The company set out to build the Endurance, an all-electric pickup truck aimed at commercial fleet operators. Its vision attracted widespread attention as governments and businesses increasingly embraced cleaner transport.

Investor confidence soared in 2020 when Lordstown merged with a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC), taking the business public. The deal valued the company at roughly $1.6 billion, making it one of several EV startups that benefited from soaring market enthusiasm during the pandemic.

However, the excitement faded quickly. In 2021, short-selling research firm Hindenburg Research accused Lordstown of exaggerating pre-orders for the Endurance pickup. The company denied misleading investors but later acknowledged that many of its reported reservations were non-binding. The controversy damaged its credibility and triggered investigations by US regulators.

Financial problems soon followed. Manufacturing electric vehicles required billions of dollars in investment, while Lordstown struggled to secure the funding needed to increase production. Supply chain disruptions, rising raw material costs and limited manufacturing experience further slowed progress.

Production of the Endurance eventually began in late 2022, but only a small number of vehicles reached customers. In early 2023, the company recalled every Endurance pickup it had built after discovering an electrical connection issue that could cause a loss of power while driving. The recall added more pressure to an already fragile business.

By June 2023, Lordstown Motors filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after its partnership and investment agreement with Taiwan-based electronics manufacturer Foxconn collapsed. The company also launched legal action against Foxconn, alleging the firm failed to honour investment commitments, claims that Foxconn disputed.

The downfall highlights one of the biggest lessons from the EV boom. Raising billions from investors and generating headlines is only the beginning. Success ultimately depends on delivering reliable vehicles at scale while managing production costs and maintaining consumer trust.

Although the Endurance never became the commercial success Lordstown envisioned, its story has become one of the most significant examples of how ambitious electric vehicle startups can struggle when expectations move faster than manufacturing realities.
