Tesla recalls more than 218,000 vehicles over rearview camera safety concern

Tesla is recalling more than 218,000 vehicles in the United States after regulators warned that a delayed rearview camera display could increase the risk of a crash.

The recall affects 218,868 vehicles, including selected versions of the Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model S, and Tesla Model X.

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue involves the rearview camera image appearing too slowly when drivers shift the vehicle into reverse. Regulators say the delay could reduce a driver’s visibility at a critical moment, increasing the likelihood of collisions with nearby vehicles, pedestrians, or objects.

For many drivers, rearview cameras have become an essential safety feature rather than a convenience. A delay of even a few seconds can create uncertainty in tight parking spaces, crowded streets, or busy residential areas where visibility matters most.

Tesla has already responded by deploying an over-the-air software update designed to correct the problem. Unlike traditional recalls that require customers to visit dealerships or service centres, the fix can be installed remotely through the vehicle’s software system.

That approach may reduce disruption for owners, but the recall still adds to growing scrutiny surrounding software reliability in modern electric vehicles. Tesla’s vehicles rely heavily on digital systems to control everything from safety functions to driving assistance technologies.

The latest recall is not an isolated case for the automaker. In recent years, Tesla has faced several safety-related recalls involving issues such as excessively bright front lights on the Tesla Cybertruck, malfunctioning reverse lights in certain Model Y vehicles, and sudden propulsion loss affecting some Model 3 and Model Y cars.

The development also highlights a broader challenge facing the fast-growing electric vehicle industry. While EVs continue to attract buyers with lower fuel costs, reduced maintenance expenses, and zero tailpipe emissions, repeated recall headlines can raise concerns about long-term reliability and software safety.

Regulators are also paying closer attention to Tesla’s advanced digital features. Last month, the NHTSA concluded an investigation involving around 2.6 million Tesla vehicles linked to a remote driving feature. Authorities said the incidents connected to the feature were limited to low-speed situations, but the investigation reflected increasing oversight of software-controlled vehicle technologies.

For Tesla, the recall comes at a time when competition in the global EV market is intensifying. Rivals across the United States, Europe, and China are investing heavily in vehicle safety, software systems, and consumer trust as automakers race to dominate the future of mobility.

Despite the setback, Tesla remains one of the world’s most influential EV manufacturers. However, the recall serves as another reminder that as vehicles become more dependent on software, even small technical delays can quickly become major safety concerns.
