George Russell seized pole position for the Qatar Grand Prix after Max Verstappen received a grid penalty for impeding him during qualifying. The decision, made hours after the session, has injected new excitement into Sunday’s race.
Verstappen was penalized for driving “unnecessarily slowly,” forcing Russell to swerve onto gravel to avoid a collision. “When you’re preparing for your lap and end up in the gravel, it’s frustrating,” Russell said. “It cost me three-tenths, and I felt in a great groove before that.”
The stewards ruled that while Verstappen’s actions were not ideal, mitigating factors such as visibility and the fact that neither driver was on a push lap reduced the penalty to one grid place. Verstappen also received a penalty point on his FIA super license, bringing him to six points — halfway to a race ban.
Russell’s upgraded starting position boosts his chances of a second consecutive victory after his win in Las Vegas last week. “It’s an unexpected opportunity, but I’m ready to make the most of it,” said the Mercedes driver.
Despite the setback, Verstappen, who has already clinched his fourth straight championship, seemed unfazed. “It’s an unlucky situation,” he remarked. “I wasn’t trying to annoy anyone, just following the delta rules.”
Sunday’s race, starting at 4:00 p.m. local time, promises heightened drama as Russell aims to capitalize on his pole position.
