Nigeria’s journey toward cleaner transport got a boost this week as the Federal Government praised local automaker SAGLEV for pushing electric vehicle (EV) adoption.

During a tour of SAGLEV’s Imota assembly plant in Lagos, Industry and Trade Minister Dr. Jumoke Oduwole said the company’s progress shows that Nigeria can lead Africa’s shift away from fuel-powered cars. “This visit reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to green industrialisation,” she said, also crediting the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) for supporting EV innovation.

SAGLEV, led by CEO Dr. Sam Gbenga Faleye, builds 16 EV models in Nigeria. These range from ride-hailing sedans to large electric BRT buses. Just two weeks ago, it launched the M-Hero 917, a 5-seater off-road electric SUV, at a Lagos ceremony with partner Dongfeng of China.

According to the company, all vehicles made at the Lagos plant are locally assembled, backed by OEM warranties, and supported with reliable after-sales service. “Nigeria can make vehicles that serve our needs and protect our air,” Faleye said. The government’s visit marks a turning point in policy support for local green manufacturing.
