Nigeria’s electric vehicle (EV) ambitions have been jump-started with the arrival of US manufacturer SAGLEV, which has begun large-scale assembly operations in the country. This move marks a significant step towards cleaner transportation and positions Nigeria as a leader in sustainable mobility within sub-Saharan Africa.

SAGLEV isn’t just about selling cars – it’s about making them accessible. The company aims to revolutionize the African automotive landscape by not only distributing and assembling EVs but also by partnering with local players to offer affordable financing options. This could be a game-changer in a market dominated by traditional gasoline vehicles.

“We envision a future where everyone can enjoy electric mobility, regardless of background,” says Sam Faleye, SAGLEV’s Chairman & CEO, a Nigerian-American who embodies the company’s dedication to empowering African communities.

Dispelling EV Myths in Nigeria

Faleye tackled common concerns about EVs, particularly affordability and charging infrastructure in an interview. He argued that contrary to popular belief, EVs are becoming increasingly cost-competitive. “Our brand-new EVs are priced to compete,” he said, highlighting the long-term savings EVs offer compared to gasoline vehicles, especially with rising fuel prices.

Concerns about charging are also addressed. Faleye emphasized the convenience of EVs, boasting a range of up to 300 kilometres on a single charge – enough for most daily commutes. Modern charging technology makes refuelling a breeze, with “rapid charging capabilities that allow owners to replenish batteries overnight,” minimizing downtime.

To further enhance accessibility, SAGLEV is spearheading the expansion of charging stations across Nigeria. Partnerships with prominent fuel stations will ensure widespread coverage, seamlessly integrating EVs into the existing transportation network. Additionally, Faleye highlights the reduced maintenance needs of EVs, translating to savings and a more environmentally friendly ecosystem.

SAGLEV’s cutting-edge electric vehicle models

SAGLEV’s foray into the Nigerian market comes with an impressive lineup of electric vehicles, designed to meet the diverse needs of consumers while prioritizing sustainability and performance.
