Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has stunned the Formula 1 world by announcing he will leave Mercedes and join rivals Ferrari at the end of the 2024 season. This blockbuster move, expected to be officially confirmed later today, sees Hamilton team up with Charles Leclerc at the Scuderia in a dream pairing for many fans.
“It’s a difficult decision to leave Mercedes after so many incredible years,” said Hamilton in a statement. “But the chance to drive for Ferrari, a team with such a rich history and passionate fanbase, is something I couldn’t resist. I’m excited for the challenge and believe we can achieve great things together.”
The move comes as a surprise, given Hamilton’s previous insistence on his happiness at Mercedes and signing a two-year contract extension last summer. However, speculation about his future intensified after a winless 2022 season and recent struggles with the new regulations.
“We understand and respect Lewis’ decision,” said Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal. “He’s been an incredible asset to our team, and we wish him all the best in his new adventure.”
The news also leaves Carlos Sainz without a seat for 2025 as Ferrari makes space for Hamilton. Meanwhile, Mercedes faces the daunting task of replacing one of the sport’s greatest drivers.
