The “Gray Era” is over: Why your next car might actually have a colour

...green is the biggest winner here

Look at any parking lot. It looks like a black-and-white movie. Right now, 80 percent of cars in America are white, black, or gray. We picked these boring colors for years to protect our resale value. But that is finally changing. Drivers are tired of being boring, and the data proves it.

Nature is Taking Over the Road
Experts say we are moving away from “playing it safe.” Instead of silver, people want colours that feel like the outdoors. Green is the biggest winner here. New colours like “Secret Safari” and “After Dark” purple are showing up on dealer lots. Brands like Dodge and Jeep are leading the way. They are using deep violets and “intergalactic” looks to grab your attention. Even Honda is launching rugged SUVs in bright orange.

Why It Matters to Your Wallet
The average new car now costs $50,000. When you spend that much, you want it to feel special. For a long time, dealers only ordered gray because it was easy to sell. But now, “Quiet Luxury” is the new trend. This means using soft, expensive-looking tints instead of plain colors. If you pick a unique color now, it might actually make your car stand out more when it is time to sell.

How AI is Changing the Paint Shop
New technology is making these cool colours cheaper to make. Companies are using AI in manufacturing to invent new paints faster than ever. This is a huge part of automotive R&D. AI helps create “matte” and “pearl” finishes that used to be only for supercars. Now, these fancy looks can fit almost any price.

The Electric Influence
Electric vehicle aesthetics are also driving this change. Since EVs feel like the future, they are using “ethereal silvers” and “smoked neutrals” to look high-tech. These colours are meant to show off “innovation and precision.” Even though EV sales have slowed a bit, their style is winning. The days of the “boring gray” car are numbered.
