Hyundai Mobis (KRX 012330) has achieved a major breakthrough in electric car technology with its innovative in-wheel system. This groundbreaking development allows drivers to independently control all four wheels, making driving electric cars easier. It represents a significant advancement in the future of electric mobility and is a milestone in the industry, as it has never been mass-produced anywhere in the world before.

The in-wheel system is a vital component of the e-Corner module, enabling unparalleled maneuverability, including zero turns and crab walking. Hyundai Mobis aims to elevate power efficiency and driving performance through this innovative system.

The journey to develop the in-wheel system began in 2010, driven by Hyundai Mobis’s recognition of the surging demand for electric cars. The company overcame technical challenges, developing key technologies like the drive motor and controller in-house.

A major advantage of the in-wheel system is its ability to maximize drive efficiency without additional power transmission components, like drive shafts. This not only improves power efficiency but also extends the cruising range for electric vehicles, making room for other crucial systems within the vehicle. Efficient torque distribution to each motor in a wheel enables optimal turns and precise body control, significantly boosting driving performance.

Hyundai Mobis is thoroughly testing the in-wheel system, using the IONIQ 5 model in collaboration with Hyundai Motor Company. The engineers are meticulously verifying its reliability for mass-production.

Furthermore, the in-wheel system serves as the core technology for Hyundai Mobis’s e-Corner system, integrating electronic steering, braking, and suspension technologies around the in-wheel motor. The company unveiled the e-Corner system at CES 2023 based on IONIQ 5 and plans to install it in real vehicles for further development within five years.

Oh Heung-sub, Executive Vice President and Head of Electrification at Hyundai Mobis, expressed their commitment to advancing this groundbreaking technology. He states, “We are determined to develop a durable and reliable in-wheel system to enable mass-production by the end of this year. Our dedication to perfecting this technology reflects our preparation for the future of mobility.”
