Ford Motor Co. reported a 16% increase in U.S. auto sales for April 2025, driven by strong demand for pickup trucks and aggressive discounting strategies. However, the automaker faced a significant 40% decline in electric vehicle (EV) sales, highlighting ongoing challenges in the EV market.

The surge in overall sales was propelled by a 23% rise in truck sales, totaling 99,954 units, including the popular F-Series and compact Maverick models. Ford’s employee pricing program and substantial discounts across various models attracted consumers, especially those eager to purchase vehicles before potential price hikes due to new tariff policies implemented by President Donald Trump.

Despite the overall growth, Ford’s EV segment suffered. Sales of the Mustang Mach-E plummeted 40% year-over-year, while the F-150 Lightning EV truck saw a 17% drop. A Ford spokesperson attributed the decline to model year transitions and limited inventory, noting that the Mach-E and F-150 Lightning had only 9 and 19 days’ supply at dealerships, respectively. However, the company anticipates a rebound in EV sales in May as inventory levels improve.

In contrast, Ford’s hybrid vehicle sales experienced a significant uptick, increasing by 30% in April. This growth aligns with the company’s strategic shift towards hybrid models, as they offer a more immediate path to profitability amid the challenging EV market landscape.
