ChargePoint Holdings Inc. is taking a firm stand against vandalism at EV charging stations with new technology designed to curb theft and damage. The company’s latest innovations—a cut-resistant charging cable and an AI-powered security system—aim to make public EV charging more reliable and secure.
The move comes as cable theft and charger tampering become growing concerns for the industry. Damaged stations frustrate EV drivers and disrupt business for charging providers. By addressing these risks head-on, ChargePoint is setting a new standard for security in the rapidly expanding EV market.
ChargePoint’s new cable, set for licensing by mid-2025, is the first of its kind to resist cutting attempts while maintaining flexibility and ease of use. Made with advanced materials, it significantly reduces the risk of theft, a problem that has cost charging operators millions in repairs and replacements.
The company plans to integrate the cable across its commercial and fleet networks while offering it to other EV charger manufacturers. This move could help protect the broader industry from a problem that has disrupted charging infrastructure worldwide.
Beyond physical deterrents, ChargePoint is leveraging real-time monitoring to stop vandalism as it happens. The newly launched “ChargePoint Protect” is an intelligent alarm system that detects cable tampering instantly. If someone attempts to cut or remove a cable, the system triggers a loudspeaker alarm, flashes warning lights, and displays alerts on charging station screens.
Operators receive real-time notifications via text or email, enabling a swift response. ChargePoint is rolling out the feature to existing customers at no extra cost through a cloud-based software update starting this month.
Pushing the EV Industry Forward
ChargePoint CEO Rick Wilmer emphasised the company’s commitment to tackling vandalism at scale. “We do not view ourselves as victims of vandalism, but rather responsible for solving it—not just for our customers, but for the industry,” Wilmer said. “Our goal is to eliminate charger reliability concerns as a barrier to EV adoption.”
By making these security innovations widely available, ChargePoint is not just protecting its network—it’s leading an industry-wide push for more resilient EV infrastructure.
