A car bomb exploded outside a police station in Northern Ireland, caught on body-worn cameras as officers rushed families, including babies, to safety, in what officials called a “reckless” and near-fatal attack.

The blast happened on Saturday night near Dunmurry police station, in a residential area where children were asleep in nearby homes. Authorities say the device detonated shortly after a delivery driver, forced at gunpoint to transport the bomb, alerted officers.

Police confirmed no one was seriously injured or killed, a result described as “fortunate” given the scale and location of the explosion.

Security Risk Assessment and Public Safety Infrastructure Under Scrutiny

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said the attack is being treated as attempted murder and is likely linked to dissident republican groups.

Police chief Jon Boutcher praised officers who “rushed towards danger,” evacuating homes despite the risk of a secondary device.

The incident has intensified debate around security risk assessment and public safety infrastructure, particularly in densely populated areas where emergency response times are critical.

Residents described scenes of panic. One father-of-two said he initially thought the explosion was a car crash before police knocked on doors urging evacuation.

“Your brain starts going 100 miles a minute,” he said, recalling how he gathered his children as adrenaline surged.

Government Funding Policy and Counterterrorism Funding Debate

Boutcher warned that policing efforts are being stretched, raising concerns about government funding policy and counterterrorism funding.

He said the PSNI does not receive the same level of support as other UK forces, citing gaps in funding for legacy and security operations.

The attack follows a similar failed bombing attempt at another police station weeks earlier, signaling what security experts describe as persistent—if limited—threat capability.

Officials across political lines condemned the attack, calling it a “blatant disregard” for civilian life.

Law Enforcement Technology and Rapid Response

The release of bodycam footage highlights the role of law enforcement technology in documenting incidents and supporting investigations.

Authorities say the delivery driver’s quick thinking, alerting officers before the explosion, was critical in preventing casualties.

Local businesses also reported damage and disruption. A nearby dental practice said while structural damage was minor, the incident affected thousands of patient appointments.

A Near Miss With Lasting Impact

For residents, the shock lingers. A pensioner living closest to the blast said he narrowly avoided being caught in it. “If we had stepped out one minute earlier, we would have been in the full blast,” he said.

Security analysts warn the incident is a reminder that, despite reduced activity, violent groups retain the intent and capability to strike.

For now, the outcome stands as a narrow escape, one that raises urgent questions about preparedness, funding, and the resilience of public safety systems.
