Ford Motor (F.N) is recalling 4.3 million pickup trucks and SUVs in the United States after a software problem may cause trailer brakes and exterior lights to fail.

The recall covers popular models including the F-150 (2021–2026), F-250 SD (2022–2026), Lincoln Navigator, Expedition, Maverick, Ranger and E-Transit.

Software Failure and Trailer Brake Risk

Ford said the issue involves the Integrated Trailer Module. When towing, the system may lose communication with the vehicle. This can cause trailer brake lights, turn signals, or even braking function to stop working.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warned that failed trailer lights or brakes can reduce driver control and raise crash risk.

Ford said it knows of 407 incidents that may be linked to the issue. The company said it is not aware of any crashes tied to the problem.

Over-the-Air Software Update Solution

Ford will fix the issue using an over-the-air software update, meaning drivers may not need to visit a dealership.

Ford and NHTSA discussed the issue in December. The company reopened its probe in January after talks with regulators.

The issue often happens when the vehicle is first started, Ford said.
