Mary Teresa Barra (née Makela; born December 24, 1961) is an American businesswoman who has been the chair and chief executive officer (CEO) of General Motors since January 15, 2014.
She is the first female CEO of a ‘Big Three’ automaker. In December 2013, GM named her to succeed Daniel Akerson as CEO.
Mary Barra serves as the Chair and Chief Executive Officer of General Motors (GM). Her vision for the company centres on achieving three ambitious goals: zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion.
Her journey to the top of one of the world’s largest automakers has been characterized by her visionary approach and commitment to shaping a brighter future for the automotive industry.
Early Life and Education
Born and raised in Royal Oak, Michigan, Mary Barra comes from Finnish descent. She embarked on her journey with General Motors in 1980, joining as a co-op student at the Pontiac Motor Division. She pursued her passion for engineering, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the General Motors Institute (now Kettering University) in 1985. Subsequently, Barra earned her Master of Business Administration from the prestigious Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1990.
Career
Barra’s career at GM has been marked by a remarkable trajectory, showcasing her engineering and leadership prowess. She held various engineering and administrative positions before climbing the corporate ladder. Notably, she served as the vice president of Global Human Resources, vice president of Global Manufacturing Engineering, and plant manager at Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly.
In February 2008, Barra assumed the role of vice president of Global Manufacturing Engineering. Later, she was appointed vice president of Global Human Resources in July 2009. Her crowning achievement came in February 2011, when she was named executive vice president of Global Product Development, responsible for design and engineering quality across GM vehicle launches worldwide. This role allowed her to lead efforts in reducing automobile platforms within the company.
CEO Appointment
Mary Barra’s most significant milestone was when she became the Chief Executive Officer of General Motors on January 15, 2014, making history as the first female head of an automobile manufacturer. However, her tenure faced formidable challenges.
In her first year as CEO, GM issued numerous safety recalls, affecting over 30 million vehicles, due to a faulty ignition switch linked to tragic accidents. Barra faced public scrutiny, testifying before the Senate and overseeing cultural changes within the company to prioritize safety and accountability.
Driving GM’s Future
As CEO, Barra propelled GM, (with a market capitalisation worth $52.35 billion) towards an electrified and autonomous future. The company made strategic acquisitions, including the startup Strobe, to accelerate driverless technology development. Under her guidance, GM is committed to offering solely electric vehicles by 2035, signalling a clear commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Boards and Advisory Roles
Beyond her GM responsibilities, Barra serves on various prestigious boards and councils, such as The Walt Disney Company and the Business Roundtable, an association of CEOs of leading American companies. She is also actively involved with the Detroit Economic Club, Duke University Board of Trustees, and Stanford University Board of Trustees.
Recognition and Honors
Mary Barra’s exemplary leadership and influence have earned her numerous accolades. She has consistently been featured on Forbes’ Most Powerful Women list and was honored on Time’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” cover. The Arthur W. Page Center Award for Integrity recognised her commitment to integrity and public communication. Barra’s exceptional contributions to the automotive industry were further acknowledged with her induction into the National Academy of Engineering.
