Blue Islands, a small airline serving Jersey and Guernsey, stopped all flights on November 14 after the Government of Jersey refused more financial support. The shutdown ends more than 26 years of operations and leaves thousands of bookings in doubt.

The airline flew five ATR 72 aircraft on six low-demand routes, including Jersey–Bristol and Guernsey–Southampton. Its collapse comes weeks after Eastern Airways shut down, raising fresh concern about the fragile state of the UK’s regional aviation market.

Flights canceled, 9,200 seats lost weekly

Blue Islands’ suspension removes about 9,200 weekly seats and 136 flights per month from UK schedules. These routes were key links for island residents who rely on air travel for health, business, and family needs.

The airline told passengers not to go to the airport. Refunds must be requested through banks or travel agents because the carrier has also stopped trading.

Talks with Jersey government fail

Blue Islands said talks with the Government of Jersey failed to produce new funding. Without support, management said it could not cover the high fixed costs of regional operations. The carrier is now considering restructuring or a possible sale.

Fragile sector faces fresh pressure

Blue Islands’ collapse follows the failures of Flybe and Eastern Airways, exposing wider problems for UK regional aviation. These small airlines face thin margins, volatile demand, and rising costs. Industry groups say deeper government support may be needed.

With fewer operators, airlines like Aurigny, easyJet, Loganair, and British Airways are expected to tighten schedules and raise prices as demand shifts.

What passengers should do

The UK Civil Aviation Authority urged passengers to seek refunds through credit card chargebacks or travel agents. Those with urgent travel needs are advised to quickly book seats on remaining carriers, as demand is rising fast.

Travel insurance may help if it includes airline failure cover. The CAA warned travelers to rely only on official websites for guidance.
