Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has intensified its push into Europe with the launch of its budget-friendly Dolphin Surf model, marking its tenth car in the region and placing renewed pressure on local automakers to deliver affordable electric options.

With a starting price of just €22,990 ($26,100), and promotional discounts slashing it to as low as €19,990 through June, the compact EV is set to reshape consumer expectations in a price-sensitive market where cost remains a key obstacle to wider adoption.

Available in three trims, the Dolphin Surf offers a 322-km range at €22,990, while the premium model stretches to 507 km at €24,990. The limited-time offer puts all variants below €25,000 — a threshold few EVs currently breach in Europe.

Only a few electric models, such as the Dacia Spring and Leapmotor T03, currently fall under the €20,000 mark. But with the arrival of rivals like Volkswagen’s ID.2, Renault’s R5, Fiat’s Grand Panda, and Hyundai’s Inster, all expected this year, the budget EV space is quickly becoming the most competitive battleground.

The Dolphin Surf is the European iteration of BYD’s wildly successful Seagull, which registered over 442,000 sales in China in 2024, second only to Tesla’s Model Y. Globally, the model’s sales have surged 45% in 2025 alone to 170,000 units, BYD confirmed on Wednesday.

The company, which overtook Tesla in 2024 to become the world’s largest EV manufacturer, is now rebuilding its European strategy. It is expanding its dealer network, introducing more hybrid models, and bringing in managers with local expertise — a calculated pivot after initial struggles in the market.

The approach appears to be working.

In Germany, BYD sold 2,791 cars in the first four months of 2025, nearly eclipsing its entire 2024 total of 2,891, according to data from Germany’s motor authority, KBA. Across Europe, first-quarter sales quadrupled to 37,201 vehicles, even as Tesla’s sales dropped 37.2%.

Davino added that BYD will expand into 12 new European markets this year and grow its sales footprint to over 1,000 locations, part of a sweeping plan to cement the brand as a serious player in Europe’s rapidly evolving EV landscape.
