Land Rover is taking its legendary Defender off the beaten path and into racing history. The British marque has revealed a prototype rally version, the Defender Dakar D7X‑R, which is currently undergoing rigorous testing in the Sahara Desert.
Designed for one of the world’s toughest motorsport events, the Dakar Rally, the D7X‑R is based on the recently launched Defender Octa, a $153,625 high-performance SUV. The prototype features a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing an estimated 626 brake horsepower. It will compete in the Stock category at the 2026 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.
Racing legends Stéphane Peterhansel, a 14-time Dakar winner, and Rokas Baciuška of Lithuania are set to drive for the team, with a third driver to be announced soon. “Defender and Dakar are a perfect match,” said Peterhansel. “Testing the D7X‑R in Morocco has been promising. I can’t wait to take it head-on.”
Land Rover has been preparing this prototype in terrain closely mirroring what it will face in 2026. The Sahara test mirrors the rally’s brutal challenges—blistering heat, unpredictable dunes, and mechanical strain. The automaker aims to demonstrate not just endurance, but engineering excellence.
In addition to competing, Land Rover will continue sponsoring the Dakar Rally, supplying support vehicles, and helping map the course until at least 2028. This marks the brand’s most aggressive push into motorsport in decades and a bold step to highlight Defender’s evolution from iconic 4×4 to performance powerhouse.
The Dakar Rally, first held in 1979, is considered one of the most grueling races in motorsport. It combines long-distance endurance with off-road extremes, testing both driver and machine to their limits. For Land Rover, a strong showing at Dakar will not only boost brand prestige but also reaffirm the Defender’s legacy in a new era.
