Ugo Ugochukwu has made history, becoming the first Nigerian-American to win the prestigious Macau Grand Prix in over four decades. At just 17 years old, Ugo not only triumphed in the 71st edition of the race but also clinched the 2024 FIA Formula Regional (FR) World Cup. Racing for R-ace GP, he dominated the weekend, leading every session and crossing the finish line ahead of notable competitors, Olivier Goethe and Noel León, both seasoned drivers in their own right.

Born to Nigerian supermodel Oluchi Onweagba and Italian designer Luca Orlandi, Ugo’s victory is not just a personal achievement but also a major milestone for motorsport, showcasing the growing influence of Nigerian-American athletes on the global stage. This victory marks the first time since 1981 that an American has taken the top spot at the Macau Grand Prix, a feat accomplished previously by Bob Earl.

Ugo’s performance throughout the weekend was flawless, with the young racer maintaining his composure despite the chaotic race conditions. Multiple safety car interventions did little to shake his confidence as he led from the start to finish, overcoming the tough competition with poise. Reflecting on his win, Ugo said, “I can’t describe the feeling, of course I’m super happy. It was quite a tricky race, I was pushing the whole way, but I was confident in the pace – ever since Q2 we’ve been really quick. We had a great weekend, and yeah, super happy to finally get the job done.”

This remarkable achievement cements Ugo Ugochukwu’s place as one of the most promising talents in motorsport. As he prepares for a move to FIA Formula 3 in 2025, Ugo’s victory at Macau serves as a clear signal that he has the skill and mental strength to succeed at the highest levels of racing.

His journey is just beginning, but his performance in Macau has already earned him comparisons to legendary drivers like Lewis Hamilton, and the motorsport world is watching closely as he continues to rise.
