FedEx Express, a global delivery company, has taken a significant step towards sustainability by deploying ten electric delivery vehicles in South Africa. This move aligns with FedEx’s commitment to transitioning its entire global pickup and delivery fleet to zero-emission electric vehicles by 2040.
To meet its ambitious goals, FedEx Express plans to have 50% of its new vehicle purchases as electric vehicles (EVs) by 2025, with a complete transition to 100% electric vehicles by 2030. In 2021, FedEx conducted EV trials in South Africa to assess the technology’s operational effectiveness on a standard route with fully loaded vehicles.
The newly introduced EVs in the FedEx fleet in South Africa are Maxus eDeliver 3 vehicles, imported from China. With a full charge, these vehicles have an operational range of 240 km. Currently, they are operating exclusively in Gauteng.
Charging stations equipped with ABB chargers, including ten AC chargers and one DC charger, are installed at the FedEx Express Operations facility for charging the vehicles. Additionally, the vehicles can also be charged at mall charging ports in and around Gauteng.
Natasha Parmanand, the Managing Director of FedEx Express sub-Saharan Africa operations, emphasizes the company’s commitment to carbon-neutral operations and the importance of fleet electrification in achieving their sustainability goals. Parmanand states that each vehicle class presents different opportunities and challenges for electrification, but the overall aim is to replace existing vehicles with zero-tailpipe emission vehicles by 2040.
FedEx’s approach to fleet replacement and electrification involves identifying the most suitable vehicle solutions for specific applications. The company actively engages with local original equipment manufacturers worldwide to build an efficient and sustainable vehicle fleet for their operations.
As e-commerce continues to expand, FedEx recognizes the significance of transforming their operations to be more sustainable. The investment in EV technology not only benefits the environment but also improves operational efficiency, ultimately providing a better service to customers.
FedEx has been at the forefront of adopting eco-friendly transportation methods. In 2003, it became the first delivery company to utilize hybrid vehicles, and in 1994, it introduced its first EV, an acid battery-powered vehicle, in California, USA.
