Forvia, the world’s seventh-largest car parts supplier, has announced its plan to extend its partnership with Chinese battery specialist and carmaker BYD to Europe. This expansion revealed on Tuesday, marks a significant milestone in the collaboration between the two companies.

Forvia, known for its comprehensive range of automotive components, will now operate alongside BYD at a new factory in Hungary. This new venture is an extension of their existing partnership, which has been successful in Asia.

“Our collaboration with BYD has already brought substantial achievements in Asia,” said Patrick Koller, CEO of Forvia. “We are confident that this expansion into Europe will drive further innovation and growth, benefiting both companies and the broader automotive market.”

This development comes at a time when global car sales have been sluggish, prompting suppliers like Forvia to seek new opportunities. As Chinese automakers, including BYD, set their sights on European markets, they aim to challenge established industry giants on their home turf.

Forvia’s existing partnership with BYD in Asia involves supplying vehicle interiors, seating, electronics, and software through seven joint plants across China. Additionally, the collaboration includes a dedicated research and development centre in Shenzhen and a new seat manufacturing facility in Thailand.

While details about the specific scale of the partnership in Hungary and the range of products Forvia will supply have not been disclosed, the move underscores a significant shift in the European automotive industry. Forvia’s spokesperson declined to comment further on these aspects.

In April, Forvia indicated that it was in discussions with other Chinese automakers interested in entering the European market. The company is also exploring ways to reduce its dependency on BYD, particularly after BYD reported its weakest quarterly profit growth since 2022 for the first quarter of this year.

As Forvia and BYD navigate this new chapter in their partnership, the European automotive sector watches closely, anticipating the impact of this strategic alliance on market dynamics and innovation.
