The ‘Holy Grail’ of EVs: Toyota’s solid-state battery could change everything

Toyota, Japanese automaker has confirmed plans to debut its first electric vehicle equipped with solid-state batteries by 2027, a move experts are calling the potential “kiss of death” for combustion engines.

The breakthrough centers on all-solid-state batteries (SSBs), a next-generation design that replaces the liquid electrolyte in current lithium-ion batteries with a solid material. This shift could dramatically improve energy density, allowing electric cars to charge in minutes while driving more than 600 miles on a single charge.

According to Toyota engineers, the new batteries promise faster acceleration, improved safety, longer lifespan, and reduced size and weight, benefits that could make electric vehicles both more affordable and appealing to mainstream consumers.

The company is partnering with Sumitomo Metal Mining Company to mass-produce durable cathode materials capable of meeting global demand, while oil firm Idemitsu Kosan plans to open a plant by 2027 or 2028 to manufacture 1,000 metric tons of lithium sulfide, a critical ingredient in solid-state battery production.

Environmental experts say the implications could be transformative. Transport remains one of the largest sources of harmful air pollution, responsible for nearly 30% of global CO₂ emissions, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. By slashing charging times and extending range, solid-state technology could remove two of the biggest barriers to EV adoption, range anxiety and charging inconvenience.

Japan is investing heavily in domestic battery production to cut its dependence on imported oil, which could help reduce both energy costs and emissions. If Toyota’s technology performs as promised, the world may soon witness a turning point in the race toward clean mobility.

Should it succeed, Toyota’s solid-state breakthrough may indeed become the long-awaited “holy grail” of electric transport, and the final chapter for petrol cars.
