The Moroccan government has approved a major expansion of the Tangier Automotive City (TAC), located in the Tangier-Mediterranean Free Zone. This move, announced at a weekly cabinet meeting, aims to strengthen Morocco’s position as a leading automotive hub in Africa.
Doubling the Free Zone’s Size
The new decree, No. 2.24.657, will nearly double the size of the free zone from 517 hectares to 1,185 hectares. This expansion comes in response to growing demand from global automotive investors, eager to capitalize on Morocco’s strategic location and competitive edge.
The TAC has played a key role in Morocco’s booming automotive sector, which has become a major contributor to the nation’s exports and industrial growth.
Attracting Global Investments
Government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas emphasized that expanding the TAC is essential for attracting more global automotive companies to Tangier. The zone, already home to major players like Renault, offers modern infrastructure and easy access to European and African markets.
Located near the Tangier Med port—one of Africa’s largest shipping hubs—the free zone is ideally positioned for companies seeking efficient trade routes to the EU and beyond.
Driving Economic Growth
Morocco’s automotive sector has seen rapid growth in recent years, contributing significantly to job creation and the country’s economy. The expansion of the TAC will allow for more industrial projects and increase the region’s capacity to produce vehicles for both local and international markets.
With this development, Morocco is set to solidify its status as a top automotive manufacturing hub in Africa, boosting both exports and foreign investments.
Strategic Location and Infrastructure
The Tangier-Mediterranean Free Zone benefits from excellent transportation networks, including road, rail, and port connections, making it an attractive location for manufacturers. Its proximity to Europe, just across the Strait of Gibraltar, gives companies a competitive advantage in reaching the EU market.
