The Peugeot 107, a city car known for its maneuverability and fuel efficiency, recently found itself in the spotlight for a most unexpected reason. A 29-year-old British-Nigerian content creator, Pelumi Nubi, defied expectations by driving a customised Peugeot 107 over 10,000 kilometers or 6,214 miles from Europe to Africa.

Nubi’s 68-day journey from London (England) to Lagos (Nigeria) not only tested the endurance of the small car but also captured the imagination of a global audience.

Launched in 2005, the Peugeot 107 was designed as a practical and affordable option for navigating city streets. Produced jointly by Peugeot Citroën Automobiles (PSA) and Toyota, the 107 was known for its low running costs and its peppy 1.0 liter engine.

Available in both three- and five-door hatchback configurations, the 107 offered surprising passenger space for a car of its size.

While marketed for urban environments, the 107 offers two engine options: a 1.0-liter gasoline engine and a 1.4-liter diesel engine. In 2009, the 107 received a facelift that improved fuel economy and lowered CO2 emissions. Breakdown statistics suggest the 107, along with its Citroen and Toyota counterparts, boast impressive reliability for cars in their class.

Safety-wise, the 107 performed adequately in Euro NCAP testing, achieving a three-star rating. While not top-of-the-line, this rating was sufficient for a city car where high speeds are rarely encountered. While production of the 107 ended in 2014, but it was succeeded by the next-generation Peugeot 108.

Nubi’s Odyssey: A testament to its endurance

Nubi’s decision to undertake this epic journey in a Peugeot 107 surprised many. Typically, long-distance treks are reserved for rugged SUVs or 4x4s. However, Nubi meticulously customized her 107, adding a bed and a kitchenette, transforming it into a capable adventure vehicle.

The 68-day journey was not without its challenges. The unforgiving Sahara Desert presented logistical hurdles, while a harrowing accident in Ivory Coast left Nubi’s car significantly damaged. Despite these setbacks, Nubi persevered, her determination fueled by a desire to inspire others, particularly Black female explorers, to embark on their own adventures.

Top six facts: A closer look at what made Peugeot 107 a success

1. Customised for adventure

Pelumi’s accomplishment highlights the adaptability of the 107. To prepare for the lengthy journey, she modified her car to include a bed and a kitchenette, showcasing the potential for creative modifications to suit individual needs.

While a 4×4 might be the typical choice for such an overland adventure, Pelumi’s success with the 107 demonstrates that fuel-efficient hatchbacks can be viable options with proper planning and customization.

2. Beyond the drive

Pelumi’s journey transcended the miles covered. She documented her experience on social media, inspiring others, particularly Black female explorers, to pursue their dreams of adventure travel. Her achievement shattered the perception of West Africa solely as a hot and remote region, instead showcasing its potential as a tourist destination.

3. Fuel efficiency and maneuverability

Topping the list is the 107’s exceptional fuel economy. Thanks to its lightweight design and tiny 1.0-liter engine, the 107 sips gas, making it perfect for navigating city streets and stop-and-go traffic. Furthermore, its compact size translates to exceptional maneuverability, making tight parking situations a breeze.

4. Affordability

The 107’s price tag was a major selling point. It consistently ranked among the cheapest cars to insure and maintain, a significant advantage for young drivers or those on a tight budget. Attractive financing options, like Peugeot’s “Just Add Fuel” program, further enhanced its affordability.

5. Practical considerations

While not spacious, the 107 offered enough room for four passengers and a small amount of cargo. The five-door variant provided easier ingress and egress, especially for families with child seats.

6. A solid second-hand option

While production ceased in 2014, the 107 remains a viable option in the used car market. Its reputation for reliability and low running costs makes it an attractive choice for budget-conscious drivers seeking a dependable city car.

The Peugeot 107 carved a niche for itself in the city car segment. While not without limitations, its combination of affordability, fuel efficiency, and maneuverability made it a compelling choice for urban driving. Even today, the 107 remains a relevant option for used-car buyers seeking a practical and economical city companion.

Nubi’s journey is an evidence of the enduring capability of the Peugeot 107, a car that has proven itself adept at navigating not just city streets, but also the vast expanse of the African continent.

This feat not only showcased the car’s durability but also highlighted its potential for long-distance travel with proper modifications.
