Chinese automaker BYD has unveiled a groundbreaking battery system capable of charging an electric vehicle (EV) in just five minutes, significantly reducing charging times and challenging industry rivals like Tesla. The company says the technology, set to debut in April, could eliminate one of the biggest concerns for EV adoption which is long charging waits.
During a live demonstration, BYD’s new system recharged the Han L sedan to provide 470 kilometers (292 miles) of range in five minutes. “This is a transformative moment for the EV industry,” said BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu. “We are bringing refueling speed to electric vehicles.”
The company has committed to deploying over 4,000 charging stations to support the new system. The first models featuring this technology will be the Han L sedan and the Tang L SUV, priced at 270,000 yuan ($37,338) and 280,000 yuan, respectively.
Challenging Tesla and global rivals
BYD’s breakthrough intensifies competition in the fast-growing EV market. Tesla’s Superchargers, which add 275 kilometers of range in 15 minutes, now face a significant challenge. Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming CLA electric sedan offers 325 kilometers of range in 10 minutes, indicating a race to dominate ultra-fast charging.
Tesla still holds an advantage in infrastructure, with over 65,000 Superchargers worldwide, compared to BYD’s growing but smaller network. However, China’s largest automaker is expanding rapidly, selling over 318,000 passenger vehicles in February—a 161% jump from the previous year. BYD now controls nearly 15% of China’s auto market.
Beyond batteries: The push for innovation
The new battery system also boosts performance, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just two seconds. In addition to battery technology, BYD is investing in driver-assistance features, including lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control in more affordable models.
Meanwhile, rivals such as Li Auto are leveraging Contemporary Amzperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) batteries to achieve a 500-kilometer charge in 12 minutes.
