More than 800 passengers arriving on Virgin Atlantic flights at Orlando International Airport were left stranded for over five hours after severe weather delayed baggage unloading operations, sparking frustration among travelers who were warned they could face arrest if they left without their luggage.
The disruption unfolded on June 27 after a Virgin Atlantic flight from London Heathrow landed at around 7:00 p.m. local time. Passengers cleared immigration and entered the baggage claim area only to discover that their checked luggage had not yet been unloaded.
As the hours passed, frustration grew. Travellers reported a lack of adequate seating and limited access to food while waiting inside the customs area.
Virgin Atlantic Flights Affected By Weather Delays
According to reports, three additional Virgin Atlantic flights arriving in Orlando experienced similar baggage delays, leaving more than 800 passengers waiting for their belongings.
Passengers said airport officials informed them they could not leave the baggage claim hall without collecting their bags due to requirements enforced by US Customs and Border Protection.
One traveller told local media she had “never seen anything like this.”
The delay stretched beyond midnight, with some passengers exploring whether they could abandon their luggage and leave the airport.
Airport Security Protocols Prevent Early Departure
Under U.S. regulations, international travelers must collect checked baggage before exiting customs facilities. The rule is designed to prevent unaccompanied baggage from remaining inside secure airport environments.
Conditions inside the baggage hall reportedly deteriorated as the wait continued. Travelers said elderly passengers and families with young children were forced to sit on the floor. One passenger reportedly collapsed, requiring assistance from emergency responders.
Orlando International Airport later apologized for the disruption.
“We understand how frustrating and disruptive unexpected weather conditions can be,” the airport said in a statement, adding that it regretted the impact on travelers’ plans.
Airline Passenger Compensation Offered
Virgin Atlantic has since contacted affected customers and offered reimbursement for snacks purchased during the delay.
The airline continues to operate year-round services between Orlando and London Heathrow, as well as routes from Manchester and seasonal flights from Edinburgh.
While weather-related disruptions are not uncommon, many passengers continue to question whether a wait exceeding five hours was an acceptable outcome.
