Astrolab, a startup company, has partnered with SpaceX to transport its Flex rover to the Moon in 2026. The Flex rover, billed as the “largest and most capable rover ever to travel to the Moon,” weighs two tons and is three times larger than its largest predecessor. Astrolab claims that the increase in size will enable greater scientific experimentation and more commercial endeavors. Multiple commercial payloads have already been secured for the trip.

The FLEX rover has been designed to meet NASA’s standards for an unpressurized rover and can also accommodate two astronauts on the lunar surface. The CEO of Astrolab, Jaret Matthews, said that the logistics system can accommodate a wide variety of cargo, and they expect that the approach will help establish a permanent lunar outpost on the Moon at a lower cost and in less time than previously envisioned.

Astrolab, in a press release dated March 31, 2023, announced that the FLEX rover has a total mass limit of over 2,000 kilograms, including both the rover and its cargo. The FLEX rover’s size advantage enables it to carry out a wider range of scientific investigations and business projects on the lunar surface than other rovers currently in operation. This increased capability allows for a more comprehensive understanding of the Moon’s geology and composition, as well as potential opportunities for commercial exploitation.

“We’ve created a logistics system that can accommodate a wide variety of cargo,” Jaret Matthews, Astrolab CEO said. “We expect that this approach will help establish a permanent lunar outpost on the Moon at a lower cost and in less time than previously envisioned. We are delighted that this contract with SpaceX will allow Astrolab to demonstrate the advantages of the FLEX rover and its modular payload system.”

SpaceX will be responsible for launching and landing the rover. The Starship, designed to transport both cargo and people, will undergo several years of collaboration with Astrolab to determine the lunar logistics for the mission. The trip is set to take place as soon as mid-2026.
