Audi is preparing to make electric driving more accessible by reviving one of its most recognisable nameplates. The new Audi A2 e-tron is expected to become the brand’s most affordable electric vehicle, while offering a driving range of up to 403 miles (650 kilometres) on a single charge under the WLTP testing standard.
If confirmed, the combination of a lower purchase price and long driving range could make the A2 e-tron one of the most attractive electric vehicles in Audi’s growing portfolio. It is designed to appeal to buyers who want premium quality without paying the higher prices typically associated with luxury electric cars.
Ahead of its official unveiling this autumn, near-production versions of the A2 e-tron have already been spotted testing on public roads in Copenhagen. The prototypes wore very little camouflage, revealing a design that combines crossover styling with hatchback practicality.
The new model retains elements of the original Audi A2’s aerodynamic shape while adopting modern electric vehicle design features. Visible details include a closed front grille, slim LED headlights and smoother body lines aimed at improving efficiency.
Industry reports suggest the A2 e-tron will start at around €38,200 (approximately US$44,000) in Germany. That would make it nearly €10,000 cheaper than the Audi Q4 e-tron, currently one of the company’s entry-level electric SUVs.
Audi is expected to offer the vehicle with four electric motor outputs producing 125kW, 140kW, 170kW and 240kW. Customers are also likely to choose from three battery sizes rated at 50kWh, 58kWh and 79kWh, providing different levels of performance and driving range.
The reported 403-mile range is based on the European WLTP test cycle. While real-world driving distances often vary depending on speed, weather, terrain and driving style, the figure would place the A2 e-tron among the longest-range electric vehicles available in its expected price category.
Long driving range remains one of the biggest concerns for motorists considering a switch from petrol or diesel vehicles. A vehicle capable of travelling more than 400 miles between charges could significantly reduce range anxiety, particularly for drivers who regularly undertake long-distance journeys.
The financial benefits extend beyond the purchase price. Electric vehicles generally cost less to operate because electricity is often cheaper than petrol or diesel. Owners also benefit from lower maintenance costs since electric vehicles have fewer moving parts and do not require routine oil changes.
Audi’s decision reflects growing competition in the global electric vehicle market. Carmakers are increasingly introducing lower-priced models as consumers demand affordable options that do not compromise on technology, comfort or driving range.
Audi CEO Gernot Döllner confirmed the return of the A2 earlier this year, describing the model as a way to make entering the Audi brand “easier and more relevant than ever.” The company also says the new A2 will help rejuvenate its lineup by attracting younger buyers and first-time Audi customers.
Over the past two years, Audi has launched more than 20 new models as it accelerates its transition towards electrification. The A2 e-tron represents another important step in that strategy by expanding the company’s offerings beyond larger and more expensive electric SUVs.
Final specifications, pricing and market availability are expected to be confirmed when Audi officially unveils the new A2 e-tron later this year. Until then, the early prototypes offer a strong indication that Audi is preparing to compete aggressively in the fast-growing affordable premium EV segment.
