Ford Motor Co will start selling certified used cars on Amazon, expanding online access for buyers who want to skip dealership visits. The move makes Ford the second car brand to offer vehicles on the e-commerce platform, after Hyundai did so last year.
The new program begins Monday in Los Angeles, Seattle and Dallas, Amazon and Ford said. Shoppers can browse a dealer’s certified used stock, check prices, and complete the sale online. Buyers must still pick up cars at the dealership. Each certified vehicle passes detailed checks and carries a factory-backed warranty.
Ford said 160 to 180 dealers have shown interest, and about 20 dealers are close to launching their listings.
Car companies have been racing to copy Tesla’s smooth online model. Tesla sells directly to shoppers and avoids U.S. dealer laws. Ford and General Motors still must sell through franchise dealers. Ford CEO Jim Farley has said Tesla’s system gives it a “real cost edge.”
Ford has tried to shrink that gap by improving digital buying tools, especially around electric cars. Hyundai opened the door in 2023 when it became the first brand to sell new models on Amazon. Ford is now betting that offering used cars online will win younger buyers and rebuild trust in a market still recovering from high interest rates and rising vehicle prices.
