Nord Automobiles, a Nigerian auto manufacturer, has started a new chapter for electric vehicles (EVs) in Nigeria. The company launched Tavet Motion, a new brand that will focus on making, selling, and servicing electric cars designed for African roads.

This step aims to cut down on expensive car imports, create new jobs, and help build a greener future for transportation.

Local vision targets affordability and jobs

Oluwatobi Ajayi, CEO and founder, Nord Automobiles, speaking  at the launching event held in Lagos, said the company spent years in research to ensure they could “dominate” and be “top-notch” in their field. Nord, known for assembling popular models like the Nord A9 and A7, will use its technical know-how for this new electric market.

The new Tavet EVs will cost between ₦16 million for simpler models and ₦32 million for luxury versions. “This makes them cheaper than many imported electric cars, which can cost more than ₦28 million after taxes and shipping,” the CEO said.
“Tavet’s goal is to make owning an EV possible and practical for more Nigerian families and businesses. This local production also means more work for young Nigerian engineers and technicians.”

Building a full electric car ecosystem

Tavet Motion knows that electric cars need more than just good roads. The company plans to build an entire support system; this includes setting up charging stations and offering battery maintenance programs. They will also partner with companies that use renewable energy. “This complete plan tries to fix Nigeria’s two biggest EV problems, not enough charging spots and unstable power supply,” Ajayi said.

CEO Ajayi was very hopeful at the launch event in Lagos. He said, “We made a promise that we’re going to change the way Africans see and view manufacturing. Tavet is born from Nord’s success.”

He added that by doing this, Nord is trying to reduce mobility costs for many businesses in Nigeria. The company’s vision is to expand across West Africa. They want to show the world that Nigerian innovation can lead the way in sustainable transport.

The launch comes at a time when Nigeria’s interest in electric cars is growing. “This shift means cleaner air in cities, cheaper transport costs over time, and new, high-tech job chances for young people,” the CEO noted. “This is a moment for Nigeria to stand on its own feet in the global move toward green technology.”
