The community around Louisville, Kentucky, woke up today to the somber news of a major accident after a UPS cargo plane crashed near the airport. The loss of an aircraft and the immediate response efforts underscore the risks faced by essential air cargo workers and the swift action taken by emergency teams. Here are the most important facts you need to know about the incident.

Facts on the Crash: What We Know

1. A UPS cargo plane crashed near the airport:

A McDonnell Douglas MD-11F cargo jet operated by UPS, designated as UPS Flight 2976, went down near the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF). The crash happened shortly after the plane took off on Tuesday evening.

2. The crash happened right after takeoff:

The large cargo plane was leaving Louisville, heading toward Honolulu, when it crashed around 5:15 p.m. local time. The location was near the intersection of Fern Valley and Grade Lane, sparking a large, visible fire and scattering debris.

3. The plane was heading to Hawaii:

The aircraft, registered as N259UP, was on a standard route carrying important packages and freight across the country to Hawaii, highlighting the crucial, non-stop role air cargo plays in global trade and deliveries.

4. Injuries were reported:

Authorities have confirmed that there were injuries resulting from the crash. Details on the specific condition of the crew members are still being gathered and released by officials. Our thoughts are with the pilots and their families as they await more information.

5. Facts on the response and investigation

The Airport Temporarily Shut Down: Due to the extensive fire and debris, the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport was temporarily closed immediately following the incident. This halt affected operations at the nearby UPS Worldport, the company’s massive global air cargo hub.

6. Police ordered a safety zone:

To manage the emergency and protect local residents from smoke and fire danger, the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) issued a shelter-in-place order. This important safety measure was for residents within a five-mile radius, later expanding to areas north of the airport to the Ohio River.

7. A full federal investigation is underway:

The cause of the tragic crash is unknown, and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation. They will work alongside the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to collect all evidence, examine the black boxes, and determine exactly what caused the accident. This thorough process aims to prevent similar incidents in the future.
