Giorgio Armani, the Italian designer who defined modern elegance and built a global empire of understated luxury, has died at the age of 91, his company said on Thursday.

Armani’s name became a symbol of timeless style, known for sharp suits, clean lines and minimalist tailoring that reshaped fashion for nearly five decades. He turned a small Milan label into one of the world’s most powerful fashion houses, with annual revenues topping €2 billion, expanding into fragrance, hotels, interiors and even superyacht design.

“Giorgio was more than a designer. He gave people confidence through simplicity,” said Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which worked with Armani on the Admiral 72 yacht unveiled in Monaco this year. “He will be remembered as a man who made the complex look effortless.”

Born in 1934 in Piacenza, northern Italy, Armani began his career as a window dresser. His breakthrough came in the 1970s with a softer, more natural menswear silhouette that swept through Hollywood and corporate boardrooms alike. Richard Gere’s wardrobe in American Gigolo (1980) cemented his global reputation.

Away from the catwalk, Armani was a passionate yachtsman. He owned several custom-designed vessels, including the 65-metre Codecasa Main, whose stark black exterior and minimalist interiors drew admiration in Portofino and Sardinia. He also lent his aesthetic to superyachts such as the Silver Star and helped redesign the interiors of the Admiral 72 After You.

In 2022, Armani became the title sponsor of the prestigious Superyacht Regatta in Costa Smeralda, blending his worlds of fashion and sailing. “He understood luxury not as excess but as clarity,” said a long-time friend and business partner. “Even on the sea, his touch was unmistakable.”

Armani never married and had no children. His company, which employs more than 7,000 people worldwide, is privately owned. Industry analysts say his death raises questions about succession and the long-term future of the brand he fiercely guarded.
