Rivian, an electric vehicle manufacturer, has unveiled a partnership with charging network IONNA and energy tech firm WeaveGrid. The alliance is expected to significantly improve access to public charging and reduce electricity costs for Rivian drivers at home.

IONNA, backed by auto giants Toyota, Hyundai, and Kia, will integrate Rivian vehicles into its ultra-fast charging network. This means drivers will soon be able to locate, connect, and pay for charging seamlessly, all from their vehicle’s dashboard. Rivian says this will match the smooth experience already offered through its Tesla charging integration.

Meanwhile, WeaveGrid will enable Rivian owners to link their EVs directly to local energy grids. This vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology allows cars to draw energy when rates are low and sell it back when demand is high. According to Rivian’s Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid, users who opt into this smart integration could cut their home energy bills by up to 30%.

“This is massive,” Bensaid told Tech Brew. “The potential of these solutions is huge for accelerating a truly sustainable energy ecosystem.”

EV adoption is rising fast worldwide. Norway reported that electric cars made up 80% of new car sales in 2021. The UK plans to ban petrol and diesel car sales by 2030. However, widespread charging access and energy affordability remain major hurdles.

With IONNA’s rollout expected later this summer and WeaveGrid’s system following soon after, Rivian believes it is taking a bold step toward solving both problems, all while making EV ownership easier and more cost-effective.
