Chinese automaker BYD has reported a 100.4% surge in first-quarter profits, reaching 9.2 billion yuan ($1.26 billion). This financial leap coincides with the company’s decision to equip even its most affordable models with advanced driver-assistance technology at no extra cost.

Revolutionising access to smart driving

BYD’s “God’s Eye” system, previously reserved for higher-end models, is now standard across 21 vehicles, including the Seagull hatchback priced at just 69,800 yuan ($9,555). This move positions BYD as a pioneer in making intelligent driving features accessible to a broader consumer base. “2025 will be the first year of intelligent driving for all,” declared BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu during a recent event in Shenzhen.

A strategic edge in a competitive market

The integration of “God’s Eye” technology has not only enhanced BYD’s product offerings but also intensified competition in the EV market. Competitors like Leapmotor, Geely, and Toyota are now compelled to reevaluate their strategies to keep pace. BYD’s market share in China rose to 13.6% in the first quarter, up from 12.1% the previous year, while Volkswagen’s share declined from 13.7% to 12.1%.

Global ambitions and future outlook

While China remains BYD’s primary market, accounting for about 90% of its sales, the company is setting its sights globally. BYD aims to export 800,000 vehicles this year and is restructuring its European operations to better align with international markets.

BYD’s impressive financial performance and strategic initiatives underscore its commitment to innovation and accessibility in the EV sector. By democratizing advanced driving technology, BYD is not only setting new industry standards but also redefining consumer expectations worldwide.
