The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has launched a major awareness and empowerment campaign in Imo State to drive adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) across Nigeria.

The “CNG Empowerment and Awareness Summit” held in Owerri on March 19 brought together government leaders, technicians, and youth to champion CNG as a cleaner, cheaper alternative to petrol. NADDC Director-General, Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, emphasized that CNG is 40–50% less expensive than petrol and emits significantly fewer harmful emissions.

The summit is part of a national strategy to transition from petrol to environmentally friendly fuel solutions. With Nigeria facing high petrol prices and growing environmental concerns, CNG adoption offers a practical route to economic relief and sustainability.

Government backs CNG push, promises jobs, safety standards

Osanipin praised the Imo State Government and Governor Hope Uzodinma for their commitment to supporting green energy and transportation. He also highlighted NADDC’s efforts to ensure that all vehicle conversions adhere to safety standards through licensed conversion centers and certified technicians.

The federal government is throwing its weight behind the initiative. Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Industry, Professor Anoka Njan stated that CNG adoption supports national goals to create jobs, boost local skills, and modernize Nigeria’s transport sector.

Dr. Emeka Madela, Commissioner for Youth Development and Talent, also stressed the economic impact. He noted that shifting to CNG can significantly reduce transportation costs for millions of Nigerians while equipping youth with in-demand technical skills.

Practical training and new infrastructure rollout underway

A hands-on training program for 60 local technicians began on March 18 and will run until March 21. The program will teach safe and efficient methods of converting petrol-powered vehicles to CNG, addressing both performance and safety standards.

In addition to training, NADDC announced plans to establish permanent CNG conversion workshops and fueling stations across Imo State. These facilities aim to accelerate CNG adoption, reduce reliance on petrol, and generate new employment opportunities in the automotive sector.

With this initiative, NADDC is positioning Nigeria for a cleaner automotive future. The focus on cost savings, environmental protection, and youth empowerment signals a transformative shift in how Nigerians power their vehicles and their economy.
